Mariana Birche

Urban and regional planner – independent researcher

Profile

Architect and researcher with over 10 years of experience in applied research, urban and environmental planning, and interdisciplinary project management. Expert in spatial analysis and GIS (QGIS), development of digital tools, and data visualization. Fluent in Spanish and English, with German at B2 level and continuous improvement. Motivated to contribute to sustainable projects focusing on urban process analysis.

“To discover is to see what everybody has seen, and to think what nobody has thought.” — Arthur Schopenhauer

Research Trajectory

I have developed my academic career at the Institute of Research and Policies of the Built Environment (IIPAC) in La Plata, Argentina — a research center jointly operated by the National University of La Plata (UNLP) and CONICET, Argentina’s leading institution for the promotion of science and technology. Since 2012, I progressed from research trainee to doctoral fellow, and later postdoctoral fellow, consolidating a line of work exploring the intersections of landscape, public space, and environmental challenges.

My research has been enriched through international academic stays in Spain and Germany, and was recognized in 2022, when I was appointed Assistant Researcher at CONICET after ranking third nationally in the "Habitat and Design" category — a tenured position I held until 2024, when I relocated to Germany.

Main Research Topics

My research focuses on public space, landscape, and urban planning instruments, incorporating sustainable urban development and strategic planning perspectives. I adopt a qualitative, interdisciplinary approach combining:

  • Theoretical and conceptual frameworks on public space and landscape
  • Spatial analysis using GIS and cartographic representation
  • Direct observation of public spaces and usage patterns
  • User surveys and participatory workshops
  • Critical review of planning instruments, regulations, and policies

This multi-layered methodology bridges academic research with practical urban planning, highlighting issues like urban flooding, safety, accessibility, and promoting green infrastructure and climate-resilient design.

Key Achievements

  • Permanent Researcher position awarded in 2022 after ranking third in the national competitive evaluation process of CONICET (Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council) within my field of specialization.
  • Doctoral thesis defended in 2020 with highest distinction (10/10): The system of public spaces as a structuring factor of the quality of the landscape and urban environment. The case of the city of La Plata
  • Postdoctoral fellow and researcher at CONICET, Argentina
  • National and international awards in architecture and urban design projects
  • Funded research projects on public space, landscape, and environmental quality (2020–2023)

Future Research Directions

I aim to explore the intersection of public space, landscape, and urban resilience, emphasizing green infrastructure and nature-based solutions. I am particularly interested in transforming streets and avenues into multifunctional public spaces that enhance mobility, environmental quality, and social cohesion. My goal is to collaborate with international research groups to develop context-sensitive, design-oriented approaches for resilient and inclusive cities.

Teaching Statement

“I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think.” — Socrates

With over ten years of teaching experience in undergraduate and postgraduate programs, my practice integrates theory and design methodology. I emphasize critical thinking, collaborative learning, and the use of real-world case studies, participatory methodologies, and nature-based solutions. I empower students to analyze and imagine resilient, inclusive urban spaces.
